TaxPad

Terms of service

The short version: we charge one price, we tell you before you start, and we do not change it. The rest of this page explains what we do, what we do not do, and what happens when something goes wrong.

What TaxPad does

You give us your tax documents. We read them, draft your return, and show you every number with the document it came from. You review the draft, correct anything that is wrong, and decide whether to file.

A software calculation engine computes every number on your return. An AI model reads your documents and explains what it found, but it never decides a tax position and never computes a figure that lands on your return. That separation is deliberate and it is not a marketing distinction.

We are not your tax preparer

TaxPad is self-preparation software. You are the person preparing and signing your return, the same as with any other do-it-yourself tax product. We provide the tool and the explanations. We do not give tax advice, and nothing in the product is a recommendation about what you should do with your money.

If your situation needs professional judgment, we will say so rather than guess.

What it costs

One price of $59 covers your federal return and every federal form we support. The price is shown before you enter any data and it is charged when you file, not before.

There are no tiers, no per-form charges, and no upgrade that unlocks a form you already need. You can build and preview your entire return, including the actual IRS forms, before you pay anything.

If we cannot file your return, you do not pay. Our screener tells you that within about a minute, before you have invested any effort.

Our accuracy guarantee, and its limits

If our calculation engine makes an arithmetic or tax-law error that causes you to owe a penalty or interest, we pay that penalty and interest.

The guarantee covers our calculations. It does not cover information you entered incorrectly, documents you did not give us, income you did not report, or a position you chose to take against what the product told you. It also does not cover a difference of professional opinion where the law is genuinely unsettled.

We state these limits here, in the same place and the same type size as the guarantee itself, on purpose.

Your responsibilities

You are responsible for giving us complete and accurate information, for reviewing the draft before you file, and for signing the return. We will make reviewing it as easy as we can, including showing you the source document behind every number.

Keep your account secure. Use the multi-factor authentication we require, and tell us immediately if you think someone else has reached your account.

When we cannot help

We prepare and file federal returns. We do not prepare or file state returns, so if your state requires one you will need to file it somewhere else.

Some returns are outside what we file. The screener names those situations up front rather than letting you discover them later. If your situation changes mid-season into something we do not support, we will tell you, we will not charge you, and we will help you get your documents out.

Ending your account

You have the right to a copy of everything we hold and to have your account closed. Today that is a request you make to support rather than a button in the product, because we have not built the export and deletion path yet and we would rather say so than put a control there that does nothing. Some records we are legally required to keep for a set period, including the record of a return that was actually filed, and we will name exactly what is retained and for how long when you ask.
